Eddie Redmayne’s ‘GQ’ admission will make you love him more

When he’s not cleaning his 2015 best actor Oscar, basking in his Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild AND Critics’ Choice nominations, or doting on his wife, Eddie Redmayne occasionally pays young actors’ rents… because everyone needs a little help sometimes, right?

The British actor, who has earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of transgender artist Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, covers the February issue of British GQ. In the teaser for the full interview, which hits newsstands Thursday, Eddie expressed his gratitude toward his parents for helping him when he was an up-and-coming actor. He explained that he wanted to extend that same help to others.

“The greatest privilege that I had was that my parents lived in London, so when I was out of university and out of work for a year, working in a pub, I didn’t pay rent. And I get letters from people trying to go to drama school and needing to pay their rent. And so that’s something I occasionally do. It’s impossibly expensive to live in London.”

50 Best-Dressed Men in Britain

Welcome to GQ’s 2016 Best-Dressed List in association with Mercedes-Benz which is published in full with our February issue, available on newsstands and as a digital edition from Thursday 7 January. In our opinion, it is definitely one of the best-of-British ways to welcome in the New Year. Our judges have compiled an eclectic list that ranges from trendsetting teenagers to grand old men and everything in between. This is because being well-dressed is nothing to do with age or fashion. As Keith Richards says, you don’t find a style, a style finds you.

That’s not to say that trends aren’t interesting. In recent years, for example, we have seen the rise and fall of the Pitti peacocks - the self-conscious dandies that lurk around Florence during that city’s biannual menswear fair, who have been replaced with a more relaxed take on sports luxe. And trend-wise right now it seems that we are witnessing the demise of the sock, as ankles remain bare even when the mercury falls.

And remember, even the most polished man won’t get it right every time. Patrick Grant - No5 in our list - was named by the Mail Online as one of the worst-dressed attendees of the British Fashion Awards in November. I felt at the time that his high-waisted dress trousers were too Alfred Hitchcock, but without the guts to experiment, how can we hope to get things right?

The February issue of British GQ including our Best Dressed supplement is available 7 January on newsstands and as a digital edition which you can download on your iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire or Android device. [Source]

Eddie Redmayne is named the world’s best dressed man beating Nick Grimshaw and David Beckham

Eddie Redmayne has had a brilliant few years and now he can add the title of World’s Best Dressed Man to his list of achievements.

The 33-year-old actor, who plays transgender artist Lili Elbe in his new film The Danish Girl, might have been wearing skirts, tights and classy dresses while filming but out of work he’s been leading the fashion pack for the guys.

Oscar-winning Eddie has been given the title by GQ magazine and had some seriously tough competition with X Factor judge Nick Grimshaw coming in second, singer Sam Smith in third and David Beckham in fourth place.

Eddie, who is soon to become a dad with new wife Hannah Bagshaw, can teach his children a thing or two about how to be a snappy dresser. [Source]

Eddie Redmayne React to SAG Noms

Eddie Redmayne, who was the toast of the awards season last year for his role in The Theory of Everything, also received a SAG nomination this morning for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and responded with his own reaction to the news:

“It means a great deal to be recognised by my peers during such a wonderful year of filmmaking. The Danish Girl took a long while to get made and I am damn lucky that I ended up having the honour of helping bring Lili and Gerda’s story to the screen. I am hugely grateful to Tom Hooper, Alicia Vikander, and our incredible cast for this truly unique collaboration. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to play Lili were it not for the generosity of the trans women and men who helped me prepare for this role; I am indebted to all of them and the community. My thanks to SAG-AFTRA members for this nomination.”

Eddie Redmayne: I blagged my career

Eddie Redmayne thinks Benedict Cumberbatch and himself have “blagged” their acting careers.

The 33-year-old star made the comment when asked if he’s in competition with the ‘Sherlock’ actor after he beat him to Best Actor at this year’s Oscars and Golden Globe Awards.

Discussing their relationship, he said: “It’s not a rivalry, no, I just … adore him. And he couldn’t have been more lovely. So kind. He’s staggeringly talented. For both of us though, that whole ride, we were just pinching ourselves, going, ‘Can you believe we’ve blagged it?’ ”

Elsewhere, Redmayne has admitted challenging role in ‘The Danish Girl’, as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe, left him feeling “vulnerable”.

The actor - who is up for the Best Actor SAG Award for his performance - said: “It leaves you feeling very exposed and vulnerable. The set itself felt very safe when I would be walking around as Lili but there was still this sense of people watching you and feeling judged.

“Imagine what it must be like for trans women who are constantly facing such judgment as well as discrimination and violence in many cases.”

And one particular nude scene was really “embarrassing” for the star.

He said: “Any time you get naked in front of a crew, it’s embarrassing.”

In it, the handsome star had to peel off his trousers and tuck his manhood through his legs.

He explained: “It’s not as if we as actors have some way of becoming comfortable with it. It would be exactly like you getting naked in front of 30 people. [Source]

Eddie Redmayne discusses his transformation for ‘Danish Girl’

Long before Amazon Studios’ “Transparent” became a hit, or Bruce Jenner became Caitlyn, Lili Elbe made her transition.

Elbe had previously been Einar Wegener, a popular artist in Copenhagen in the 1920s. One day his wife, Gerda Wegener, also a painter, asked him to don woman’s heels and stockings to fill in for a client who had missed her portrait sitting. It was a case of the clothes making the woman; Einar recognized that his true gender was female, and Lili was born. In 1930 she would be among the first to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Portraying the tricky role of Einar/Lili in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of David Ebershoff’s 2000 novel “The Danish Girl,” a fictionalized account of the story, Tom Hooper cast Eddie Redmayne, whom he had directed previously in “Les Misérables” (2012).

Redmayne received an Academy Award earlier this year for his demanding lead performance in “The Theory of Everything” as the scientific genius Stephen Hawking, who suffered from motor neuron disease. In “Danish Girl,” which opens here Dec. 11, his character undergoes both a physical transformation and profound psychological introspection.

On the phone from London in October, Redmayne discussed the challenges and satisfactions of playing Lili.

Q. It must be an acting workout to go directly from Stephen Hawking to Lili Elbe.

A. As an actor, your dream is to portray interesting people, and I certainly thought after the last year I had my quota with playing Stephen. And when this film came together — I had actually been attached myself to the film for three or four years — when the financing came together, it really felt like a privilege. Our dream as actors is to get to play interesting people. So one doesn’t think of it in terms of difficulty. It’s a joyous thing to do.

The Danish Girl star Eddie Redmayne says he tried to ‘find some of her in me’

Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar playing Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, returns to the screen this week with another transformational performance in The Danish Girl. Directed by Tom Hooper, the film tells the story of artist and transgender pioneer Lili Elbe — the first known recipient of gender confirmation surgery — and wife Gerda Wegener (Redmayne and Alicia Vikander).

During a video interview at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, Redmayne, Hooper, and Vikander spoke to EW about what drew them to Lili and Gerda’s story, and how they tried to tell it.
