The Trial of Chicago 7 writer-director Aaron Sorkin takes us behind the scenes of his Oscar-buzzed Netflix drama to spotlight the impressive roster of actors that brought this film to life.
In the video above, Sorkin is joined by stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Jeremy Strong, John Carroll Lynch and Frank Langella as they talk about working as an ensemble in a film that is all-too-relevant for today’s social and political landscape.
Based on a true story, Trial of the Chicago 7 dramatizes the events of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which started off as a peaceful protest but unraveled into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organizers of the protest—including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale—were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot and the trial that followed was one of the most notorious in history. Eddie Redmayne announces today’s AFI Movie Club selection: REDS.
The film appears on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Passions list of the greatest love stories of all time and was also included on AFI’s 10 TOP 10 list of the greatest epic films of all time in 2008. REDS features the star power of three AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD recipients – Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson – and production designer Richard Sylbert received an honorary master’s degree from AFI!
REDS was Beatty’s debut as a solo director. His success with HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1978) – which he co-directed with Buck Henry – encouraged Paramount to finance REDS. In this exclusive AFI Archive video, Diane Keaton talks about REDS at the awards ceremony for AFI Life Achievement honoree Warren Beatty.

An inspirational conversation between Oscar winners Colleen Atwood and Eddie Redmayne. The pair discussed Colleen’s remarkable career as a Costume Designer, touching on her life, inspirations and practice. Colleen has won four Academy Awards for her work in costume and has designed for films such as Edward Scissorhands, Memoirs Of A Geisha, Chicago, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Silence of the Lambs.
The fascinating discussion touched on Colleen’s beginnings in the industry and her early aspirations as a painter. She also talked through her design process, her relationship with directors such as Tim Burton and Rob Marshall, and dissected the intricacies of creating clothing for a character for film. Colleen explained “it’s not about 50 costume changes…It’s about creating an iconic image for a character”. [Source]
